The Financial Times recently reported that cola giant The Coca-Cola Company (KO) will launch smaller and slimmer versions of its Coke, Diet Coke and Coke Zero brands of soft drink cans in U.K. later this month.

Coca-Cola will launch a 250 ml can, which will contain 105 calories as compared to 139 calories in the larger 330 ml can. The slimmer cans are expected to be priced at the same rate per 100 ml as its larger counterpart.

Beverage giants are witnessing a decline in the sales of carbonated soft drinks (CSD), especially the colas, due to rising health consciousness and increasing public and governmental concerns regarding obesity and other co-morbidities.

To reinvigorate the sales of its sparkling beverages, like Coke and Fanta, The Coca-Cola Company is offering more choices to its customers in package sizes, sweeteners and beverages (including more low- and no-calorie selections). The new slim cans are part of this ongoing plan.

    The gourmet beer industry is in a quandary these days that will impact the value of industry stocks, such as Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM), Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD), and MolsonCoors (NYSE: TAP), among others. We think Boston Beer, maker of Sam Adams, is in the best position to thrive.

    First, let’s wipe the foam way and study a problem for the industry that’s in significant need of a solution.

    The brewery industry has unleashed an army of lobbyists upon Washington, DC, to curry favor, twist some arms (and yes, bend some elbows) to convince Congress to reduce tax burdens micro-brewers consider heavy and onerous. These taxes are a bottom line killer in a combative industry.

    Companies such as Boston Beer and Anheuser Busch may have a point on high excise taxes. No longer are North America and Europe no-brainers for beer companies. Growth has stagnated in the so-called “old continents” and breweries are looking to new, emerging market opportunities such as China, India, and increasingly, Africa.

    But the entire industry has the dry heaves over a declining market, with older Baby Boomers giving up their wicked ways and their Millennial kids opting for that raspberry cake martini over a nice pint of lager.

    That’s where the lobbying campaign comes in, with 2012 a banner year for micro-brewery lobbying efforts, and 2013 should follow suit. In fact, lobbying ranks were significantly swelled as the big micro-brewers put the full-court press on Congress to alleviate what industry executives view as exorbitantly higher excise taxes.

    This summer, the US Brewers Association launched a huge lobbying effort that targeted 90 US Senators and 250 members of the House of Representatives, with face-to-face meetings on tap with 250 brewery executives.

    Molson Coors Brewing (TAP) operates in a different corner of the alcoholic beverage business: beer. The $9 billion brewer is one of the biggest in the world, with brands like Molson and Coors as well as Blue Moon, Keystone and Miller Lite (the latter through a joint venture with SABMiller (SBMRY: Pink Sheets) here in the U.S.).

    Molson Coors is engaged in a battle of the big boys – as the second largest brewer in Canada and the U.S., the firm primarily competes against top-rival Anheuser Busch Inbev (BUD) for market share. Like BEAM with its small barrel bourbon line, TAP has poured resources into the craft beer segment, the fastest-growing area in the alcoholic beverage space. While that's not likely to materially change its business, it should provide a welcome margin boost.

    Beer sales tend to ebb and flow with the broad economy. In 2013, with consumer discretionary spending on the upswing, beer spending should grow in kind. For TAP specifically, the possibility of a falling dollar bodes well for the firm's large international exposure -- and its ability to hike its payout.

    Right now, TAP pays a 32-cent dividend for a 2.6% yield.

    Indeed, consumer-oriented stocks are among the weakest performers in the Dow today.
