Top 10 Restaurant Companies For 2014

What do you think would happen to a restaurant if it had horrible customer service and served mediocre food? Or a hair dresser who butchered your new 'do and then proceeded to re-run your credit card for an additional $10 tip?

I think we can all agree that they'd go out of business. At the very least, one wouldn't expect them to flourish.

Yet that's exactly what's happening with banks.

No surprise: People don't like banks
According to a recent Gallup poll, only 26% of people have either "quite a lot" or a "great deal" of confidence in their banks. In fact, Congress is one of the few institutions that scores lower in this regard, said financial bureau chief Matt Koppenheffer, author of our exclusive free report about the market's nine best dividend stocks.

And the nation's biggest banks are the worst offenders. In a J.D. Power & Associates survey of customer satisfaction from earlier this year, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) and Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) ranked at or near the bottom of the industry in every geographical regional examined. And they were the absolute worst performers in this year's survey of bank reputations by industry publication American Banker.

Shares of once-staid Darden Restaurants (DRI) have become increasingly volatile as fundamentals suffer and activist investors treat the company as their play thing.

    Bloomberg

Darden’s shares, for instance, rose 6.4% yesterday after an activist investor announced a position in the stock, after dropping 3.6% last Thursday when it released disappointing earnings and said it would spin off Red Lobster.

Wunderlich Securities’ Robert Derrington thinks activist investors might be dreaming if they expect a big pop in the share price:

Activists Barrington Capital (2.8%) and Starboard Value (5.6%) have taken positions in DRI and argue that management’s plan doesn’t go far enough to improve shareholder value. Both argue to establish a public REIT to hold its restaurant properties, though vary in separating growth-oriented businesses from mature concepts. Barrington argues DRI could be worth $71-$80/share thru separating its mature, growth and real estate assets; a valuation we suspect may not be supported by declining revenue (SSS) stream.

Darden’s shares dropped 0.6% to $54.01 today, even as McDonald’s (MCD) gained 0.3% to $96.54, Yum! Brands (YUM) rose 0.2% to $74.10 and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) advanced 0.4% to $533.11.

CTBI earned one Star in this section for 1.) above. A Star was earned since the Free Cash Flow payout ratio was less than 60% and there were no negative Free Cash Flows over the last 10 years. The company has paid a cash dividend to shareholders every year since 1988 and has increased its dividend payments for 33 consecutive years.

Dividend Income vs. MMA: Why would you assume the equity risk and invest in a dividend stock if you could earn a better return in a much less risky money market account (MMA) or Treasury bond? This section compares the earning ability of this stock with a high yield MMA. Two items are considered in this section, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. NPV MMA Diff.
    2. Years to > MMA

The negative NPV MMA Diff. means that on a NPV basis the dividend earnings from an investment in CTBI would be less than a similar amount invested in MMA earning a 20-year average rate of 3.41%. If CTBI grows its dividend at 1.5% per year, it will never equal a MMA yielding an estimated 20-year average rate of 3.41%.

Alan Diaz/AP NEW YORK -- The struggling parent company of Olive Garden and Red Lobster reported a sharply lower quarterly profit Friday and said that its president and chief operating officer will retire. Darden Restaurants (DRI) said Drew Madsen, 57, will be succeeded by the president of its specialty restaurant group, Gene Lee. The appointment is effective immediately. The company's specialty restaurant group, which includes chains such as The Capital Grille and Bahama Breeze, has performed better than the company's flagship chains. At Olive Garden, the company's biggest chain, sales fell 4 percent at restaurants open at least a year in the latest quarter. The figure fell 5.2 percent at Red Lobster. The declines came despite the company's ongoing efforts to revitalize menus and advertising to better reflect changing eating habits. In the specialty restaurant group, sales edged up 0.5 percent at restaurants open at least a year. The metric is a key gauge because it strips out the impact of newly opened and closed locations. To cut spending by about $50 million a year, the company is also reducing its workforce by between 80 to 85 positions, as well as making program cuts. A representative said the personnel cuts won't be at the restaurant level. For the three months ended Aug. 25, the company said it earned $70.2 million, or 53 cents a share. That's compared with $110.8 million, or 85 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Analysts expected a profit of 70 cents a share. Sales rose to $2.16 billion, helped by the opening of new locations. That was short of the $2.19 billion Wall Street expected, according to FactSet. Darden, based in Orlando, Fla., said Madsen will work with Lee and Darden's other executives on the transition until he retires. Madsen joined the company in 1998 as executive vice president of marketing for Olive Garden. He became COO in December 2004. Lee joined Darden in 2007. Kim Lopdrup will take over leadership of the company's speci

Recently giant food conglomerate, Cargill announced it had partnered with the Swiss biosynthetic pharmaceutical company, Evolva (EVE:SW), to develop a more consistent and less expensive stevia sweetener via Evolva microbial fermentation-based process. This is big news for the future of stevia because a microbial fermentation-based process does not have to rely on soil conditions or weather, and stevia can be manufactured anywhere, thus having the potential of guaranteeing an endless supply line of stevia. Through the microbial fermentation, the manufacturer has the capability to process the key sweet individual components of stevia using low-cost plant sugars, and allows for the individual components of stevia, regardless of how minute, to be developed creating blends in any volume, which then could open the door for these manufacturers to fine-tune its stevia to local tastes. But what would be most attractive is that, because the fermentation process does not require the entire plant, the method could conceivably shave upwards of 70% off the cost of producing stevia extracts.

Tony Tribble, Invision/AP Forget about Bloomin' Onions or boneless wings, for many consumers, the choice of where to dine often comes down to a different factor: which restaurant has the best booze. "Alcoholic beverages can be a key driver of traffic, differentiation, and loyalty," said David Decker, president of Consumer Edge Insight. According to the firm, two factors that keep customers coming back are "selection" and "pricing." Consumer Edge Insight recently surveyed restaurant customers to find out which casual-dining spots generated the most loyalty with their alcoholic beverages. Taking the top spot for "selection" was Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD), with 29 percent of those surveyed saying they were "most likely to visit it most often due to its good selection of alcoholic beverages." Applebee's (DIN) took the second spot, with 24 percent, and Outback Steakhouse (BLMN) and T.G.I. Friday's tied for third place with 22 percent each. Prices also keep customers coming back to Buffalo Wild Wings. When asked which casual-dining brand they were "most likely to visit most often due to its good prices of alcoholic beverages," Buffalo Wild Wings came out on top with 30 percent. Chili's (EAT) was No. 2 at 23 percent, and Ruby Tuesday (RT) was third with 22 percent. Buffalo Wild Wings has always made alcohol a part of its experience, even making it part of its tagline: "Wings.Beer.Sports." Priced between cheaper domestic lagers and pricier craft beers, Game Changer became the fourth-most-popular draft beer at company-owned locations within two weeks of its release. Brinker International Casual dining stocks aren't dead as an investment category. Investors just need to know where the tasty treats can be found on the menu. Chili's Grill & Bar parent Brinker International (EAT) moved higher on Wednesday after reporting better than expected quarterly results. Company sales climbed higher, fueled by a 0.3 percent increase in comparable-restaurant sales. Its international locations fared even better. Some casual dining chains that are bucking the general downward trend and posting positive comps are doing so by discounting aggressively to keep patrons coming. But that's not Chili's game at all. Net margins actually expanded nicely at Brinker, with adjusted earnings per share climbing 18 percent during its fiscal second quarter. The 1,557-unit Chili's chain is doing just fine. But the same can't be said about its competition. Red Ink, Ruby Ink Seeing shares of Brinker open 8 percent higher after posting better than expected quarterly results may be painful for investors in Ruby Tuesday (RT) or Red Lobster parent Darden Restaurants (DRI). Those two stocks took a hit the last time they offered up fresh financials. Ruby Tuesday and Red Lobster are falling out of favor with the hungry, with comps plunging 7.8 percent and 4.5 percent respectively in their latest quarters. Both companies have fallen short of Wall Street profit targets in each of their past three quarters. Brinker, on the other hand, has now surpassed bottom-line expectations in three of the past four quarters. With Ruby Tuesday's profits turning to losses and Darden so disillusioned with Red Lobster that it's looking to sell it or spin it off, it's easy to see why savvy investors looking at the casual dining sector are turning to Brinker. The stock hit a new 52-week high on Wednesday, and this could be just the beginning. Tech is the Secret Ingredient Why is Chili's succeeding at a time when profits at many of its peers are receding? Tuesday's Range: $1.61-$1.68

    52-Week Range: $1.31-$5.50

    Tuesday's Volume: 76,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 101,786

From a technical perspective, RIC bounced higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $1.59 with decent upside volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $1.31 to its recent high of $1.71. During that move, shares of RIC have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of RIC within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if RIC manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $1.71 to $1.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in RIC as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $1.59 or above more near-term support levels at $1.50 to $1.44 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 101,786 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then RIC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.10 to $2.20. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give RIC a chance to tag its 200-day moving average at $2.48.

Top 10 Regional Bank Companies To Watch For 2014

Credit: pallspera.com via Flickr.

When the time comes to buy a home, you should hope for a buyer's market, ample assets in the bank for a down payment, a great home to buy, and an environment of low mortgage interest rates. Low prevailing rates don't necessarily mean that you'll get offered low ones, though. Here are some reasons why you might get offered disappointing mortgage interest rates.

The lender
Shop around, and you'll find yourself offered a variety of mortgage interest rates, as different lenders use different (or differently weighted) criteria and algorithms when making their calculations and decisions. When you shop around, try a range of lenders, such as one or more national banks, regional banks, credit unions, and community banks. Credit unions, for example, often offer lower rates than big national banks.

The lock-in period
It's common to lock in a mortgage rate with a lender, but the longer the lock-in period you choose, the higher the mortgage rate you may be offered, as this exposes the bank to more risk. Alternatively, you may have to pay in points -- i.e., prepaid interest -- for a longer lock-in.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Patricio Kehoe]

In fact, today the company announced that it will be launching a new universal life product for the Canadian market called Manulife UL by May 26 of this year. The new product will offer cost-effective insurance protection, as well as the opportunity for tax-advantaged investing, catering to customer demands for a more simplified insurance solution, which should help boost sales to some extent. Although the firm balance sheet is highly leveraged, exposing it to possible damages in the case of higher-than-expected policy liabilities, Manulife capital position has improved substantially over the past year. With a ratio of regulatory capital to capital required at 248%, the firm possesses excessive capital levels, well above competitors like Prudential Public Limited Company (ADR) (PUK), China Life Insurance Company Ltd. (ADR) (LFC), and Sun Life Financial Inc. (USA) (SLF), which all sport a 200% ratio. Moreover, the company excessive capital should allow it to maintain the above average dividend yield of 2.66% offered to shareholders.

  • [By Wallace Witkowski]

Shares of Fuel Tech Inc. (FTEK) fell 15% to $5.86 on moderate volume. The air-pollution control technology company reported fourth-quarter earnings of 2 cents a share on revenue of $24.2 million. Only two analysts on FactSet estimated earnings averaging at 7 cents a share, while only one expected revenue of $28 million.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Fuel-Tech (FTEK), which uses a suite of advanced technologies to provide boiler optimization, efficiency improvement and air pollution reduction and control solutions to utility and industrial customers. This stock is off to a slow start in 2013, with shares up just 7% so far.

If you take a look at the chart for Fuel Tech, you'll notice that this stock has entered a tight consolidation chart pattern over the last month, with shares moving between $4.19 on the downside and $4.78 a share on the upside. Shares of FTEK are now starting to trend higher and move within range of triggering a big breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in FTEK if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.66 to $4.68 a share and then once it takes out more resistance at $4.78 to its 52-week high at $5.20 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 77,549 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then FTEK will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets of that breakout are $5.50 to $6, or even $7 a share.

Traders can look to buy FTEK off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $4.33 a share, or just below its 200-day at $4.14 a share. One can also buy FTEK off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

But that is not to say that, over the long term, high-carbon utilities might not be able to crack the technology and cost issues that would make “clean coal” competitive with other low-carbon energy sources. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz has said, “No discussion of US energy security and reducing global CO2 emissions is complete without talking about coal and the technologies that will allow us to use this resource more efficiently and with fewer greenhouse gas emissions.”

Presently there are 13 pending proposals awaiting approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), with a total proposed export capacity of 17.9 Bcfd. Two projects have been approved by FERC. Cheniere Energy (NYSE: LNG) and Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE) have had projects approved with a combined proposed capacity of 4.46 Bcfd.

In addition to beating the market since the beginning of the year, diversified energy utilities, such as MDU Resources Group Inc (NYSE: MDU), Dominion Resources Inc (NYSE: D) and Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE), significantly outperformed pure-play or predominantly all-electric utilities, such as Duke Energy Corp (NYSE: DUK) and Entergy Corp (NYSE: ETR), by as much as several percentage points (See Chart B).

Interestingly, among top performers, there was no dominant strategy for exploiting natural gas demand, as these firms were involved in all aspects of the value chain–from exploration and production to distribution and storage. These companies have not only been benefiting from a natural gas surplus, but also from the pressing need to expand US energy infrastructure to deliver this newfound bounty to businesses and households.

At a premium of slightly more than 50%, it's not surprising that salesforce.com's (NYSE: CRM  ) decision to acquire cloud marketing specialist ExactTarget (NYSE: ET  ) wasn't greeted with cheers from investors. The aggressive move by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff to drop $2.5 billion on a company that has issued revenue guidance of just $376 million to $379 million for the year seems a bit much, and based on Salesforce's share price drop at the open, the market agrees. But don't be too hasty to abandon Salesforce shares -- there may be a method to Benioff's madness.

Top Healthcare Technology Companies To Buy Right Now

By Mike Yamamoto of OptionMonster

NEW YORK -- Ford (F) popped on strong China sales at the end of last week, and bullish option traders are rolling with the move.

OptionMonster's tracking system detected the purchase of 45,000 September 18 calls for 26 cents and the sale of an equal number of September 17 calls for 62 cents on Friday. Volume was below open interest at the lower strike, so it appears that a winning position was closed and rolled higher.

The adjustment allows the trader to collect 36 cents while staying in the trade for more potential gains, though the new long calls will lose value if the stock remains below $18 through mid-September. They expire well after the auto maker's new CEO takes charge on July 1. These calls lock in the price where shares can be purchased, allowing investors to acquire a stock with limited risk or to ride a rally without ever owning it. The index managed to pull back some of its gains on Friday, but it still shed more than 3% for the week. Despite the negativity from investors, Japan got a big boost to end the week from data that showed that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's aggressive stimulus plan is working. If it keeps up, this week's losses could be just the right dip for investors to capitalize on a new growth spurt across the Pacific.

Abe-nomics hits the right marks
The Tokyo metropolitan area's core consumer price index, a measurement that's often taken as a reading on Japan's greater inflation as a whole, grew by 0.2% in April and 0.1% year over year -- its first growth in four years. Japan's overall core CPI fell 0.4% year over year, but the country's deflation has been declining over the past few months as the impact of Abe's easy money spreads.

When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Centene (NYSE: CNC  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By Holly LaFon]

Importantly, we like the industry in which Centene (CNC) competes. Some of our investors might recall that one of our prior investments, Amerigroup, was acquired in 2012 by Wellpoint at a val uation that allowed us to achieve a return on investment of greater than 100% over the roughly one - year time period that we owned the shares. Medicaid managed care companies not only save states money but also offer better service; therefore, more states a re letting managed care companies run their Medicaid programs. To that end, states are expanding both the geographies carved out to managed care companies and the types of programs. The next phase of growth will come from the dual - eligible population. D uals (or dual - eligible population) are 8.3mm 3 people in the U.S. that are eligible to receive both Medicare and Medicaid benefits (mainly low - income seniors). According to the Kaiser Foundation, Duals accounted for almost 40% of Medicaid spending although they made up only 15% of the Medicaid population. We believe there are ample growth opportunities for CNC and other companies to meet the challenges of managing these disparate Medicaid members for the foreseeable future.

Advisors' Opinion:

The other alternative is WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity (DXJ). As the name suggests, it's the better alternative when the yen is declining. This fund is up 23% so far in 2013, compared with 15.5% for the iShares ETF.

The recent plunge in China (FXI) puts it down 8% and even the hedged Yen Japan ETF (DXJ) has lost almost 5% in just a week or so.

In last week's column, Souring Sentiment Will Help Stocks, I discussed how the sentiment needed to become more negative in order to create a good buying opportunity. Last week's action is a step in the right direction as despite the market bullishness in December, I thought that the risk was high and that only selective buying was warranted.

Investors seeking to cash in on the Japanese stock market face a Catch-22. The government is trying to goose the economy by, among other things, lowering the value of the yen, a move designed to make Japanese exporters more competitive (see Japan Rebound Is for Real). But a falling yen harms U.S. investors because money they have in Japanese securities translates back into fewer bucks. Enter WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity (DXJ), an exchange-traded fund that invests in the stocks of dividend-paying Japanese firms that have a market value of at least $100 million.

For U.S. Bancorp, a fine of this magnitude is nothing more than a slap on the wrist. However, it is a harbinger for change in how regulators view third-party relationships. Banks will now have to think long and hard about outsourcing, even to reputable companies like Jack Henry and Associates (NASDAQ: JKHY  ) and Fiserv (NASDAQ: FISV  ) .

Margins matter. The more Jack Henry & Associates (Nasdaq: JKHY  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Jack Henry & Associates's competitive position could be.
