Top 10 Communications Equipment Stocks To Watch Right Now

On Feb. 3, the billionaire investor George Soros (Trades, Portfolio) bought Polycom Inc. (PLCM) at an average price of $11.72 and currently holds 9,400,708 shares of the stock. This trade makes me feel that he is betting in favor of the communications equipment sub-industry. So let's take a look at this company and try to explain to investors the reasons this is an apparently appealing investment opportunity in an industry that is becoming concentrated and globalized, dominated by large players like Cisco Systems (CSCO) and Qualcomm (QCOM).

Announcing Reductions in Workforce

Polycom provides standards-based unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) solutions for voice and video collaboration. The company has three products and solutions categorized as follows: UC Platform, UC Group Systems and UC Personal Devices.

The firm announced two plans in order to optimize the organization. The first one, revealed last year, targeted a 4% work force reduction as well as a reduction in leased facilities. The second plan, announced last month, is another 6% work force reduction. The company will also look to reduce the amount of leased office space.

Advisors' Opinion:

Another under-$10 stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Revolution Lightning Technologies (RVLT), which designs, manufactures, markets and sells, commercial grade, LED replacement lamps, LED fixtures and LED-based signage, channel-letter and contour lighting products. This stock has been a monster for the bulls so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 445%.

If you take a look at the chart for Revolution Lightning Technologies, you'll notice that this stock has recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $2.19 to $2.22 a share. Following that bottom, shares of RVLT exploded to the upside and hit a recent high of $3.96 a share with strong upside volume flows. Shares of RVLT are now finding some buying interest right around its 50-day moving average of $3.36 a share. If that level can hold, then RVLT will set up to resume its uptrend and potentially trigger another big breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in RVLT if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.70 to $3.80 a share and then above more resistance at $3.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.21 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then RVLT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.94 to $5.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy RVLT off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average at $3.36 a share, or around $3 a share. One can also buy RVLT off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Big Earnings Movers: The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) is up 2.1% at $68.58 on a good showing for its films but not so much for its TV programming. Molycorp Inc. Without making too much fuss over a small-cap stock, Revolution Lighting Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: RVLT) is seeing its share price rise by nearly 25% today after reporting results this Friday morning. Yahoo! Finance does not have any estimates for the company, but Revolution posted an operating loss of $3.1 million in the quarter, more than four times worse than its loss in the same period in 2012. Even with adjustments Revolution operating loss totaled $1.8 million.

  • [By Stock Investor]

First up we have Revolution Lighting Technologies, Inc (RVLT). As of last week RVLT had a market cap of $280m. Revenues for the last year came in at $4.4m. The company is averaging a cash burn of approximately $7m per quarter over the last two quarters. If I give the company the benefit of the doubt and assume the $7.5m of investments they made last quarter was a one time event, the cash burn then drops to under $4m per quarter. In March RVLT raised $5m from the issuance of shares priced at $1.17. The company is still in need of additional financing, and with the stock price up 400% in the last three months, it would be wise for them to issue shares right now. This increases the risk for investors dramatically right now.

As of December 31, 2011, the Company was active in 35 countries. In July 2013, it acquired Coordina (Gestion Electronica Logistica, S.L.). Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By ICRAOnline]

In the previous three-month period (fourth quarter), revenue fell 4% year over year to $1.65 billion mainly on account of 33.7% drop in original equipment manufacturer (OEM) revenues and 0.8% decline in branded revenues. Product revenues dropped 8.4%, which was partially compensated by 8% improvement in service revenues.

  • [By victorselva]

In a macro view, revenues in the electronic equipment and instrument sub-industry will remain strong due to the rise in equipment and instrument manufacturers. Distributors, electronic manufacturing service (EMS) companies and original equipment manufacturers (OEM) are going to increase orders as the economy improves in the future. With this promising outlook, let's take a look at Gabelli麓s last trade and try to explain to investors the reasons of this appealing investment opportunity.

If you are a long-suffering holder of XRX, it could be worse. What if you had purchased Juniper Networks (JNPR) a year or so after its IPO?

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Juniper Networks (JNPR) is the biggest underdog in the competitive IP networking market. While most investors fixate on standard-bearer Cisco Systems (CSCO), Juniper has been gaining market share and building its war chest. Now, this $10 billion tech name looks well positioned to benefit from big tailwinds pushing the IP networking business forward.

Juniper designs and sells hardware and software that enable IT infrastructure to communicate and remain secure. The firm has a stellar business in supplying carrier routers, telecom equipment that's been in high demand thanks to network expansion efforts from telcos. Enterprise IT appliances are another key to Juniper's growth strategy -- even though Cisco is the 800-pound gorilla in the room, JNPR has been able to take a bigger piece of the enterprise appliance business in recent quarters.

Despite its comparatively small size in the industry, JNPR sports healthy levels of profitability and a huge $3 billion net cash and investments balance. That mountain of dry powder is enough to cover a full third of the firm's current market capitalization, providing a big risk reduction over the firm's near-$20 share price. With rising analyst sentiment coming into JNPR this week, we're betting on shares.

A mistrial has been declared in Juniper Networks' (NASDAQ: JNPR) infringement suit against Palo Alto Networks (NADAQ: PANW) Shares of Juniper lost 0.64 percent, closing at $26.27 while Palo Alto surged 10.90 percent, closing at $77.02.

  • [By John Divine]

Shares in Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR  ) , which shot up 6.6% and 3.2% in separate days last week, came back down to Earth today, losing 3.8%. Wall Street cheered comments from the networking solutions company's CEO last Wednesday, as he suggested increasing demand from telecom customers. One factor pressuring shares today is the possibility Juniper gets in a bidding war down the line to acquire an IT security company in the wake of public outrage over the U.S. government's pervasive invasion of privacy.

It's been a year since Verizon and AT&T went on record as fans of Nokia's (NYSE: NOK  ) then-new Lumia 920, running Microsoft'snew Windows Phone OS. Why would the two undisputed leaders in mobile-phone sales, both of which had already profited handsomely from their respective relationships with Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) , go on record as rooting for the "other guy"? Because at the time, Apple could call the shots, even to wireless leaders like Verizon and AT&T -- and it did.

LifeLock Inc. (NYSE: LOCK) has only been public for about 15 months. It is a high beta stock, trading at 55-times expected trailing earnings and almost 48-times expected 2014 earnings. The driving force here is that identity theft and organized global fraud against consumers is forcing everyone to buy identity protection services. Target was the worst recent news on this front, but there are literally dozens of other companies who have had data breaches on their millions of customers. LifeLock shares hit a new high of $20.83 on Friday and closed up 1.6% at $20.41 on the day. This one is up about 150% from its IPO in late 2012.

We re-established an investment in CME Group, Inc. (CME) during the period. CME is the largest and most diversified derivatives marketplace in the U.S. Its exchanges support trading across a variety of asset classes, including interest rates, equity indexes, energy, agricultural commodities, foreign exchange and metals. We believe CME has the opportunity to significantly accelerate its growth rates due to the eventual normalization of interest rates and the attendant interest rate volatility. CME's interest rate trading volumes (ADV) have been depressed as a result of the Fed's zero interest rate policy and low interest rate volatility. For example, interest rate ADV was 4.8 million in 2012compared to 7.1 million in 2007, before the financial crisis. However, given the Fed's recent policy statements (discussed above), market participants are starting to anticipate an end to quantitative easing (QE). On May 30, CME experienced record volume for interest rate derivatives with ADV of 19.4 million. With the globalization of CME's business, a host of new products, and the regulatory requirement for interest rate swaps to be cleared on an exchange, we believe CME's interest rate volumes can surpass their prior peak, significantly driving earnings growth for the company.
