Top Blue Chip Stocks To Watch For 2014

There are few technology analysts who would excuse Intel's (NASDAQ: INTC  ) failure to both foresee and participate in the mobile computing revolution. But does this egregious oversight, capped off by the CEO's pending retirement, mean that Intel stock is a lost cause? Hardly. In my opinion, in fact, it's one of the biggest blue chip bargains today.

Take Intel's dividend yield. At 4.3%, it blows other blue chip stocks out of the water. According to The Wall Street Journal, the average yield on the S&P 500is 2.12%. And the same figure for the Dow Jones Industrial Average is 2.43%.

INTC Dividend data by YCharts.

To sweeten the pot, Intel consistently increases its quarterly distribution. Five years ago, as you can see in the chart above, Intel stock paid out $0.14 per share each quarter. This year it's paying $0.225. That equates to a 60% increase.

So is the iPad experience, where HBO GO is available. Logging in there with my Comcast credentials gets access to episodes but no viewing history, making it a poor substitute for Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) and Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) iTunes, both of which bookmark video content across devices.

Apple (AAPL) shareholders have generally thought little of the release of another item classification. On the other hand, doing likewise again might be an immense mix-up. Bits of gossip have long been proposing that Apple is chipping away at the improvement of its own form of a smart watch, called the iwatch, after Samsung (SSNLF) moved into this business.

Low dividends are easier to pay
When you look at the rest of the low-payout-ratio list, you'll see similarly conservative dividend practices. Disney (NYSE: DIS  ) has just a 22% payout ratio, but its dividend yield is just 1.2%, despite having the huge profit engines of Marvel-based movies and its blockbuster media network to rely on. Similarly, IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) has made great strides in the tech industry, diversifying early beyond its former reliance on hardware and scoring much more lucrative high-margin business in other sectors. But even after a recent dividend increase, IBM still yields less than 2%.

    Company performance
Here's the thing: It will be expensive and difficult for companies to comply with this rule. Some are ready. Others are not.

Canon (NYSE: CAJ  ) ranks among the worst performers in an analysis from The Enough Project. Among other shortcomings, the company does not identify smelters in its supply chain, and does not participate in any programs to source conflict-free minerals from the DRC region. IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) falls in the middle of the pack when compared to other electronics companies. IBM also has not identified the smelters in its supply chain and has no policy requiring its suppliers to use conflict-free smelters. However, the company is working meaningfully to improve traceability in the region. Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD  ) is among the top performers in Enough's rankings. It was one of only six companies to pilot the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's due diligence guidance on conflict minerals. While it still has some work to do to comply with the SEC's rule, the company is well on its way. The gold standard, however, goes to Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) . The company is at the top of Enough's ranking, and has been working on dealing with the conflict mineral issue for some time now. Intel is one of the few companies to publish and audit its smelters, and was the first company to commit to making a fully conflict-free product from the DRC by 2013. Intel has demonstrated genuine leadership in this area.

It's worth noting that in some cases, shareholders move on this issue even if the regulatory environment is unsettled. Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) had a shareholder resolution on its 2012 proxy ballot related to conflict minerals. While Cisco was far from the worst performer -- the company has a conflict minerals policy that includes a requirement for conflict-free smelters -- the proponents wanted Cisco to study the feasibility of

Nati Harnik/AP Warren Buffett, chairman of the board of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B), is surprisingly open about his mistakes, chronicling them for all to read -- and learn from -- in his annual shareholder letters. The Cigar Stubs The textile mill that gave Berkshire Hathaway its name turned out to be an albatross for more than two decades as Buffett dithered over shutting it down. Located in Massachusetts, far from the new textile and cotton hubs down South, it was a money-loser from the start. He has since admitted his stubborn attachment to it probably cost Berkshire $200 billion in lost opportunity costs to invest in better companies. Back then, Buffett was more a proponent of the "cigar stub" theory of investing -- buying a downtrodden company or stock and smoking out the last few puffs of profit. Another iteration of this thesis gone wrong was his purchase of Blue Chip Stamp Co. in the late '60s. It was a lesser rival of the Sperry & Hutchinson Green Stamps Co. Both involved an early form of loyalty program in which shoppers collected stamps that could be redeemed for merchandise. "When I was told that even certain brothels and mortuaries gave stamps to their patrons, I felt I had finally found a sure thing," Buffett said in his 2006 shareholder letter. However, Blue Chip revenues declined by more than 80 percent from 1970 to 1980 and by almost 99 percent by 1990 as credit-card loyalty programs and increasing affluence made shoppers reluctant to waste time pasting stamps in books. What Buffett learned became a new leg of his investing stool: to only buy businesses for their demonstrated profitability. The Economic Moat Buffett coined the term "economic moat" to describe the competitive and hopefully monopolistic advantages that will help a company thrive. He has long said he regrets buying Dexter Shoes in 1993, purchasing it with Berkshire Hathaway stock then worth $433 million for an estimated loss of $3.5 billion. He admits now it didn't have t

And lastly, Mankiw mentions emerging markets. If you want to bet against the United States dollar and own a company that generates all of its profits outside the United States, it could be useful to take a look at Philip Morris International (PM). Asia makes up 37% of its profits. The Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe make up 27% of its profits. Smoking rates in countries like Indonesia are increasing at 10-25% annual rates. The Marlboro brand is gaining market share in Asia. The company is planning aggressive expansion into Central Africa. If you want emerging markets exposure, Philip Morris International could be a decent way to cover your bases.

Imperial trades cheaply and pays a great, sustainable and for-ever-growing 4.5% cash dividend yield. The company's 2014 10.4 times P/E multiple represents a 40% discount to what most European consumer staples sell for. Besides, the owner of brands such as Davidoff and Gauloises, trades at a much more conservative level than its direct tobacco peers. Philip Morris International (PM) and British American Tobacco (BTI) sell for 2014 15 and 14.2 times earnings, respectively.

Next, my (narrowly defined extractable) reserve multiples approach supports an observation I have made several times in Oil & Energy Investor. Super large companies, such as Exxon Mobil Corp. Earnings from McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) are due out next week, and investors should prepare themselves for the worst. After a brief spring thaw in April when comparable sales barely managed to break even with last year's results, they turned south again the following month and all signs are pointing to another dismal performance.
