Hot Japanese Companies To Buy For 2014

DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) has fired back at Japanese telecom SoftBank's reported attempts last week to pressure investment banks into denying DISH the financing it needs to take over Sprint.

The satellite TV company has asked the Federal Communications Commission to essentially throw out SoftBank's request to buy a majority stake of Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S  ) because of SoftBank's reported use of the Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba's anticipated IPO as bait. If an investment bank lends to DISH, the reports say, it will not get a chance to underwrite Alibaba's expected recording public offering.

In its letter yesterday to the FCC, DISH said, "If SoftBank has the power to influence crucial financing decisions of a Chinese company and enlist those decisions in the service of its effort to acquire Sprint, then the proposed foreign ownership needs to be assessed in light of this Chinese company as well."

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Integrated Silicon Solution (Nasdaq: ISSI  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Integrated Silicon Solution doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, not so great. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 7.0%, and inventory increased 43.7%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks potentially problematic. Revenue grew 20.0%, and inventory grew 43.7%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue dropped 1.8%, and inventory dropped 0.8%.

ift truck manufacturer Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc. (HY) declined after the company provided qualitative guidance for the remainder of 2014 that may have been viewed negatively by some investors. Revenues and pre-tax income both increased during the quarter, but after-tax net income declined as a result of a higher tax rate.

Heavy-equipment makerHyster-Yale Materials Handling (NYSE: HY  ) announced yesterdayits second-quarter dividend of $0.25 per share for both its Class A and Class B stock.

Lift trucks aren't the sexiest business in the stock market, but for a long time, Hyster-Yale Materials Handling (NYSE: HY  ) rode the recovery in construction and manufacturing to big gains for its forklift business. Yet so far this year, Hyster-Yale stock has performed badly, as investors started to worry about the health of the global economy. After Hyster-Yale released its third-quarter results, some investors focused almost solely on the company's extremely strong results. Yet despite what Hyster-Yale said, the real question for the company remains whether the macroeconomic trends that have propelled the U.S. forward will spread across the world, or whether the sluggishness we've seen in Europe and elsewhere will eventually cause a slowdown in the U.S. as well. Let's take a closer look at how Hyster-Yale did last quarter.

The management team at oil and gas companyAtlas Energy (NYSE: ATLS  ) has really taken Warren Buffett's advice to heart. Buffett's old adage to "be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful" seems to be that team's approach. After selling its shale assets to Chevron at the top of the market, the company has been diligently acquiring natural gas assets at the market's low. That blueprint continues to be followed as evidenced by the recently announced acquisition of substantial natural gas assets via its master limited partnership, Atlas Resource Partners (NYSE: ARP  ) .

  • [By Joseph Hogue]

Atlas Resource Partners (NYSE: ARP  ) offers the lowest cost to DCF and the second-highest yield of the group. The company is active in the Barnett Shale, Appalachian Basin, the Raton Basin, the Black Warrior Basin and the Mississippi Lime with an interest in over 12,000 producing natural gas and oil wells. The partnership's coverage ratio just missed a top rank as well, and the units could be a solid addition. May saw insider purchases by four officers for 52,530 units at an average price of $19.73 per unit with no insider selling in the past twelve months.

The second, and riskier, option is to buy MLPs engaged in natural gas production. While these tend to have some portion of their output hedged against sharp price fluctuations, they retain much more exposure to the ups and downs of natural gas prices than the midstream partnerships, which function as toll collectors.EV Energy Partners(NASDAQ: EVEP),Atlas Resource Partners(NYSE: ARP),BreitBurn Energy Partners(NASDAQ: BBEP) andMemorial Production Partners(NASDAQ: MEMP) are some of the upstream (oil and gas production) partnerships in the US shale plays.

Ever heard of PositiveID Corp. (OTCMKTS:PSID)? Most people haven't, so don't worry if it's an unfamiliar name. What's surprising is that PSID is still a little unfamiliar to the masses at this stage of the Ebola game. It's not just a worry that we only have to worry about domestically. It's now spreading within the United States, which is a whole different ball game than preventing it from getting to the United States. This presents a real risk of pandemic spreading within our borders. PositiveID can help.
