Stocks that are making large moves like these are favorites among short-term traders because they can jump into these names and try to capture some of that massive volatility. Stocks that are making big-percentage moves either up or down are usually in play because their sector is becoming attractive or they have a major fundamental catalyst such as a recent earnings release. Sometimes stocks making big moves have been hit with an analyst upgrade or an analyst downgrade.

Regardless of the reason behind it, when a stock makes a large-percentage move, it is often just the start of a new major trend -- a trend that can lead to huge profits. New Jersey Resources (NJR)

Since I wanted to increase the yield of my portfolio, I decided to look at just the REITs and Utilities for my new purchases, and not the "regular" stocks. I avoided MLPs due to the tax issues (which will be discussed later). I already own OHI, DLR, O, AVA and D. So I decided to buy DX, the only REIT I didn't already own, and WEC, the utility which had the highest, and most consistent dividend growth rate.

When judging a company's prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it's booking in the accounting fantasy world we call "earnings." This is one of the first metrics I check when I'm hunting for the market's best stocks. Today, we'll see how it applies to New Jersey Resources (NYSE: NJR  ) .

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

James River Coal (NASDAQ: JRCC  ) will release its quarterly report on Friday, and the hard-hit coal producer doesn't look likely to escape the big losses that have plagued it for a long time. With analysts seeing James River Coal earnings stuck in the red for the foreseeable future, investors have to wonder how much longer the company can sustain ongoing losses of this magnitude.

  • [By Dimitra DeFotis]

Alpha Natural Resources(ANR) andJames River Coal(JRCC) each rose nearly 12%. The largecap U.S. coal players also rallied: Arch Coal(ACI) was up 10%,Peabody Energy(BTU) jumped nearly 9% .

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Stocks on the Move: Chegg Inc. (NYSE: CHGG) is down 21.8% at $9.77 after the company IPO today. USEC Inc. (NYSE: USU) is up 57.2% at $XX after the U.S. left duties in place on imports of French low-enriched uranium. James River Coal Co. (NASDAQ: JRCC) is up 19.5% at $1.41.

  • [By Robert Weinstein]

Lawsuit after lawsuit, a billion dollars in cost overruns, taxpayer subsidies and the most expensive coal plant to operate causing electric rates to skyrocket, if this becomes the norm. The new project is called Plant Ratcliffe by Southern Co. Plant Ratcliffe is quite the boondoggle, but proponents say it always costs more to build the first one and costs will come down as the technology improves. More plants are in the planning stages and may bring a needed shot in the arm to mining stocks. Alpha Natural Resources (ANR), Walter Energy (WLT), Arch Coal (ACI), Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF), Peabody Energy (BTU), and James River Coal (JRCC) are companies that may benefit from increased demand for coal. Not all coal or coal companies are equal, so it's crucial to discriminate based on your investment time-horizon goals. With that said, the announcement should have been followed by a deep sell-off in coal and utility related stocks. But something happened. Or, rather, didn't happen. The above coal stocks didn't sell off tremendously and are largely moving along with the rest of the market today. This is noteworthy because stocks don't bottom on good news, they reach a bottom on awful news. Let me explain: When a stock chart continues trending lower, what you're witnessing is investors throwing in the towel and moving on. Leaving aside bankruptcies for a moment, almost all stocks have a core group of investors that are commonly known as the "strong hands." A stock is at the bottom when the weak hands are gone. At some point, distressing news (like an unfavorable EPA announcement regarding coal) hits the wire and the related stock or stocks react with little or no movement. This is what we are witnessing right now in coal-related companies.

The PowerShares QQQ ETF tracks the Nasdaq 100 Index, which is made up of 100 of the biggest stocks in the Nasdaq Stock Market based on market capitalization. It includes U.S. and international companies but excludes the financial industry and a few others. Compared to many other major technology-focused ETFs, such as the iShares US Technology ETF (NYSEMKT: IYW  ) , this one is bigger, charges less in fees, and has a more impressive performance record. Its expense ratio, or annual fee, is a very low 0.2%, comparing favorably with many peers. It doesn't offer much of a dividend, as many of its holdings don't pay them.

The following is a list of stocks to sell or avoid, as they could be in for a negative double whammy.

Stocks to Sell: Cypress Semiconductor (CY)

I was almost disappointed to see that Cypress Semiconductor (CY) was up near the top of the double danger list. I am a big fan of CEO T.J. Rodgers but he is one of the largest sellers of Cypress shares. Five insiders have sold stock in the past month, and in all, they have sold 346,000 shares for more than $3.3 million since the first week of March.

This report can also be released in either real or nominal conditions, the former being adjusted for the effects of inflation.
